Reader discretion is advised.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Tuesday, I made a terrible mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A potential client had just told me, &#8220;Every SEO company sounds exactly the same. They all promise identical things, use the same buzzwords, and honestly? Their websites look like they were built by the same person having a very bad day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I laughed. I said he was probably exaggerating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I decided to prove him wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Spoiler alert: He wasn&#8217;t wrong. He was terrifyingly, soul-crushingly right.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='the-great-seo-website-safari-or-how-i-lost-my-faith-in-humanity'  id=\"boomdevs_1\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great SEO Website Safari (Or: How I Lost My Faith in Humanity)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent six hours analyzing 47 SEO company websites. Companies from St. John&#8217;s to Victoria, from one-person &#8220;digital marketing ninjas&#8221; to agencies with more employees than a small town has residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I discovered didn&#8217;t just make me question the SEO industry. And judging by my research, about 90% of agencies are shopping from the same clearance bin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The most popular template appears on 23 different agency websites.<\/strong> Same fonts. Same color scheme (that aggressive blue-and-orange combo that screams &#8220;we read a blog about color psychology once&#8221;). Same section headers. Same &#8220;About Us&#8221; layout where they inevitably use a photo of diverse people in business attire pointing at a laptop like it just told them the meaning of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only things that change are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The company name (obviously)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The city name (usually)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes the phone number (when they remember)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='finding-2-promise-me-everything-especially-things-that-are-impossible'  id=\"boomdevs_3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding #2: Promise Me Everything (Especially Things That Are Impossible)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>42 out of 47 agencies promised &#8220;first page Google rankings&#8221; or &#8220;guaranteed results.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the thing that made my eye twitch: Google explicitly states &#8220;No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But apparently, 89% of SEO agencies didn&#8217;t get the memo. Or they got it and decided to use it as toilet paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The most common promises I found:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;First page rankings in 30 days!&#8221; (appeared on 31 sites)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Guaranteed ROI or your money back!&#8221; (28 sites)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;We&#8217;ll triple your traffic in 90 days!&#8221; (19 sites)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Dominate your competition!&#8221; (literally every single one)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My personal favorite was the agency that promised to &#8220;obliterate your competition and make Google beg for mercy.&#8221; I assume Google is currently in therapy dealing with the trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='finding-3-stock-photo-bingo-champions'  id=\"boomdevs_4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding #3: Stock Photo Bingo Champions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every agency used the exact same stock photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The &#8220;SEO Agency Stock Photo Starter Pack&#8221; includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The handshake photo (white guy in suit shaking hands with slightly-less-white guy in suit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The &#8220;diverse team meeting&#8221; (four people of different ethnicities all smiling at a laptop like it&#8217;s performing Shakespeare)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The upward-trending graph (because subtlety is dead)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lightbulb moment (woman in blazer pointing at lightbulb floating above her head)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The &#8220;typing furiously&#8221; shot (hands on keyboard, because that&#8217;s what work looks like)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>23 agencies used the exact same hero image<\/strong> of a guy in a suit pointing at a floating holographic screen covered in SEO-related icons. I&#8217;m pretty sure that guy has appeared on more websites than cat videos at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='finding-4-the-jargon-explosion'  id=\"boomdevs_5\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding #4: The Jargon Explosion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every agency&#8217;s homepage reads like someone fed an SEO textbook to a broken AI and asked it to write marketing copy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common phrases that appeared across multiple sites (with frequency counts):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Boost your online visibility&#8221; (31 times)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Drive targeted traffic&#8221; (29 times)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Maximize your ROI&#8221; (34 times)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Cutting-edge strategies&#8221; (26 times)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Proven methodologies&#8221; (18 times)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The award for most ridiculous jargon goes to the agency that promised:<\/strong> &#8220;Synergistic optimization leveraging omnichannel paradigm shifts to actualize your digital transformation journey through innovative growth hacking methodologies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read that sentence seventeen times and I&#8217;m still not sure it means anything. But it sounds expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='finding-5-case-studies-from-the-twilight-zone'  id=\"boomdevs_6\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding #5: Case Studies from the Twilight Zone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every agency has suspiciously similar &#8220;success stories.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The template appears to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Client was struggling (usually a vague industry like &#8220;HVAC company&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We implemented our &#8220;proprietary strategy&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traffic increased by exactly 300% in exactly 6 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Client is now &#8220;dominating their market&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Red flags I noticed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Screenshots that are clearly from different websites\/time periods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Percentage increases that are mathematically convenient (always round numbers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testimonials that sound like they were written by the same person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before\/after graphics using identical layouts across different agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One agency claimed they helped a &#8220;local plumber increase leads by 400% in 4 months.&#8221; Another agency, three cities over, helped a &#8220;regional plumber increase leads by 400% in 4 months.&#8221; Either these plumbers are related, or someone&#8217;s being creative with the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id='finding-6-the-pricing-shell-game'  id=\"boomdevs_7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding #6: The Pricing Shell Game<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nobody wants to tell you what anything costs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every site follows the same pricing strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mention they have &#8220;affordable packages&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>List three mysterious service tiers (Basic, Professional, Enterprise)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refuse to show actual prices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Force you to &#8220;schedule a consultation&#8221; to learn what you&#8217;ll pay<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The consultation bait-and-switch:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Free strategy session!&#8221; (it&#8217;s a sales call)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Complimentary website audit!&#8221; (they&#8217;ll find 47 problems you didn&#8217;t know you had)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;No-obligation consultation!&#8221; (you&#8217;ll leave feeling obligated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One agency promised a &#8220;free $500 value SEO audit.&#8221; I&#8217;m curious how they calculated that a 15-minute phone call costs $500, but I assume it involves the same math they use for their &#8220;guaranteed&#8221; results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id='why-this-matters-and-why-your-business-is-suffering'  id=\"boomdevs_8\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters (And Why Your Business Is Suffering)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the uncomfortable truth: <strong>This template-driven, copy-paste approach isn&#8217;t just lazy marketing.
